According to Agassiz's biographer, Edward Lurie, the work was too complex for the general public and too descriptive for the increasing number of naturalists interested in the more theoretical notions proposed in works like those of Charles Darwin. - According to the broadside the series of lectures was to be similar to one just completed by Agassiz at the Lowell Institute whose object was "to explain the successive creation of the several divisions of the animal kingdom." Only one year after this lecture series Agassiz returned to America to become professor of zoology and geology at the Lawrence Scientific School at Harvard. Lists the following among the 35 members of the lecture committee: J[ohn] K. Kane, R[obert] M. Patterson, Robert Hare, S[amuel] G. Morton, C[harles] D. Meigs, T[homas] D.
